在英國生活，其實常會用到一些法文單字或用語。除了最普遍的 café、baguette (法國長棍麵包)、croissant (可頌)之外，還有下列常用的法文：

1. pain au chocolat 巧克力起酥麵包

台灣有些店家翻譯為巧克力可頌，但和可頌不同的是，pain au chocolat 是方形的，裡面夾有一到兩條黑巧克力。在英國也是很常見的麵包。巧克力的拼法，英、法稍有不同。法文是 chocola，英文是 chocolate。

2. chic: Adj. 時髦的；優雅的；雅緻的

在英國生活，要習慣稱讚別人與被稱讚。而 chic 就是個很好用的字，可以稱讚別人的衣著很優雅、時髦。看過 The Devil Wears Prada 的同學，對這個詞應該也不陌生。

例：You look so chic! 

3. Bon Appétit  祝你好胃口（餐前祝福語）

直譯就是 good appetite，通常在菜都上桌，大家要一起開動時說。

4. the crème de la crème 精英；精華

例：She was hoping to attract the crème de la crème of the art world to her exhibition.

她希望能吸引藝術界的精英來參觀自己的展覽。

5. je ne sais quoi  法語的 “I don't know what” 難以描繪（或表達）的好品質；妙不可言的特性

例：Although he's not conventionally attractive, he has a certain je ne sais quoi that makes him popular with the ladies.

儘管從平常標準來看他並不迷人，但他身上有種說不出的氣質讓他很受女士們青睞。

6. c'est la vie   生活就是如此，這就是生活

其實比較像中文常說的『這就是人生』因為通常是用在生活中無奈的部分。英文解釋為 used to say that situations of that type happen in life, and you cannot do anything about them

例：I can't go to the game on Saturday - I've got to work. Oh well, c'est la vie.

週六我不能去看比賽——我得去上班。哎，這就是生活。

7. faux pas: N. 失言；失禮 words or behaviour that are a social mistake or not polite

faux pas 是名詞，通常搭配的動詞為 make。
 

例: I made some remark about his wife's family, and then realized I'd made a serious faux pas.

我談論了幾句他妻子的娘家，接著就意識到這很失禮。
