常見易混淆單字3

有些英文動詞用法,因為有類似語意(但使用時機不同),因此學生在使用上常會產生錯誤。以下為許多學生易混淆之動詞組:

 

1. lie/lay

現在式 過去式 過去完成式 進行式
lie(說謊) lied lied lying
lie(躺,位於,在於) lay lain lying
lay(放置,產卵) laid laid laying

ex.A pen lay on the desk.
(桌上放著一支鉛筆。)
ex.There are several houses lying empty in the town.
(城裡有幾間空房子。)
ex.Our strength lies in our loyal customer base.
(我們的強項在於我們忠實的顧客基礎。)
ex.I suspect he lies about his age.
(我懷疑他謊報了年齡。)
ex.He laid the tray down on the table.
(他把托盤放在桌上。)
ex.This is in line with the policy laid down by the management.
(這點符合管理階層所制定的政策。)
2. rise/raise/arise/arouse
rise語意為「上升、增加」,raise為「舉起、撫養、提高、導致」,arise為「出現,產生」,arouse為「喚起」。
ex.I had to raise my voice to make myself heard over the noise.
(在一片喧嘩中,我必須要提高嗓門以讓大家聽見。)
ex.The discussion has raised many important issues.
(這次討論引起很多重要議題。)
ex.Should the opportunity arise, I’d love to go to Japan.
(萬一有機會,我想要去日本。)
ex.The balloon rose gently up into the air.
(氣球慢慢升入空中。)
ex.Inflation is rising by 2.1 percent a month.
(通貨膨脹一個月增長2.1個百分點。)
ex.Fares will raise next year. ➝ They will raise the fare next year.
(raise為及物動詞,後方必須接受詞。)
ex.They will rise the fares next year. ➝ Fares will rise next year.
(rise為不及物動詞,後方不能接受詞。)
ex.Let’s hope nobody arises the issue. ➝ Let’s hope that the issue doesn’t arise.
(arise為不及物動詞,後方不能接受詞。)
3. rob/steal
rob受詞為搶劫的地方或人,steal受詞為偷走之東西。
ex.The terrorists financed themselves by robbing banks.
(恐怖份子靠搶銀行來獲得資金。)
ex.They robbed the company of $2 million.
(他們從這間公司盜取了兩百萬美金。)
ex.The number of cars which are stolen every year has risen.
(每年失竊車輛的數量都在上升。)
ex.A gang stole the head office. ➝ A gang robbed the head office.
ex.They robbed his gold watch. ➝ They stole his gold watch.
