【多益常見混淆字彙】 resume、restore、restrain、restrict、refrain

• resume與restore都是V.，意思都是恢復，但用法有些微的不同：

(1) restore 🡺 指某物損壞後的修復或重建使其恢復到原來良好的狀態，也可指其他事物受損或喪失後經努力恢復原來狀態。

The government restored confidence in the stock market.
（政府恢復了股票市場的信心。）
 

(2) resume 🡺 指活動暫停中斷後又開始恢復進行。

The suspended multilateral talk was resumed a year later and finally an agreement was reached.
（暫停的多邊談判一年後又重新開始，最終達成一項協議。）

• restrict、restrain與refrain都是V.，意思有限制、抑制，用法如下：

(1) restrict 🡺 指把某人或物體限制在一定的範圍內，也可用於（以法規）限制：restrict …to；在表示約束自己的時候，片語為：restrict sb. to sth./ Ving.

Some facilities in this amusement park may have to be closed at peak times to restrict the number of visitors.
（這遊樂園中的一些設施可能在尖峰時刻被關閉以限制遊客的數量。）
 

(2) restrain 🡺 抑制、制止、管轄；也可以表示約束自己，控制自己，常用片與如下：restrain oneself from sth./Ving.

The patient had to be restrained from walking out alone.
（這個病人必須被制止獨自走出去。）

We restrained the children from playing by the road.
（我們制止小孩在路邊玩耍。）
 

(3) refrain 🡺 refrain from N./ Ving

Please refrain from smoking in public.
（請不要在公眾場合抽煙。）
